men like that
portraits of queer men
The construction of a personally authentic identity may be the moral imperative of our generation. Given the competing systems
of thought that are intent on enslaving minds toward narrow political and economic agenda, the pursuit of authentic self-expression
is increasingly difficult. Backlash against emerging queer identities is often veiled in language of moralism and "traditional
values." I believe that this is code for something else. Indeed, I believe that the real fear about queers is related to the
process of self-discovery and promise of personal freedom. Coming out as queer most often requires personal risk, some internal
fortitude, and the ability to embrace the idea that personal authenticity is a path toward a good life. To combat the promise
of self-examination, narrow stereotypes and broad misconceptions about queer people are spread by those whose power is threatened
by independent thought and freedom.
This project intends to disorient stereotypes and to represent queer men in their complexity and variation. It intends to
be an antidote to stereotypes -- whether they be the product of religious bigotry, political convenience, cultural history,
or the various biases that have emerged within the queer community. It's not my intention to idealize queer men. Just as I
don't believe that all religious people are hateful bigots, I do not believe that queer men are saints. All of us need the
freedom to be accountable for our beliefs and actions. Indeed, my hope for this series is to inspire pause and to ask viewers
to consider both the deep humanity of those represent and, in doing so, to consider their human potential as well.
The connecting thread between the men represented in this series is contact with me -- whether it be through my daily life,
intimate relationships, or the Internet.
To participate in the project, please send me clear head shots that have good contrast. If you would prefer to arrange a sitting
or photo shoot, please contact me and we can schedule a studio visit. The project will take some months...
